Product Engineer

Imagineers is a strategic design and intelligent technology studio in Australia and New Zealand. We design how your business can grow intelligently, then build it with you. We offer connected strategy, design, product, software development and transformation services in one studio.

You will be a product engineer on our client work, hands-on: customer apps, web products, internal tools and workflow automation, with AI in the product where it earns its place. A product engineer works out with the client what to build, decides what good looks like, and builds it, with AI coding agents doing most of the typing. Writing the code is the smallest part of the job. Your job is to give our clients the best possible products, using your talent for product engineering in collaboration with your peers and the company founders to create outstanding work for our clients.

• Sit with the client's people, understand their business, find out what they need, and turn it into a precise definition of what to build and what good means for it.
• Scope and sequence the work: the thinnest version that proves it, then what follows.
• Build it, across the stack, with AI coding agents as your main instrument, and review and test everything they produce.
• Ship to production and run it: hosting, security, data, observability and cost.
• Design the interface where no designer is on the project, and work with our UI/UX designers where one is.
• Measure what happens after release and decide what to fix next.
• Set up the client's own engineers to take the product over.

• Three to five years building and shipping software products, with products in production that you can walk through in detail: the problem, what you built, what happened next.
• The habit of getting requirements out of people who have never written them down, and the judgement to know when you understand the problem well enough to build.
• Taste: you can tell which of several working solutions people will actually like, and you care about that.
• Fluency across a modern stack, such as TypeScript and Node, Python, Postgres and a major cloud, and daily, current use of AI coding agents to build with.
• Pragmatic security, privacy and accessibility, built in from the start.
• The appetite to grow fast, work directly with clients in ambiguity, and learn from senior technologists and founders.
• You run yourself: you set your own plan, keep your commitments, ask early when you are stuck, and need little oversight. We are a studio of collaborators who are very good at what they do, and we hire the same.

• Project based to begin, as a contractor to Imagineers, with the potential to grow into a full-time role.
• Based in Sydney, working alongside our founder. Client work is mostly remote, with occasional travel when a project needs it.
• Work alongside senior strategists, designers, researchers and technologists.
• Use whichever development tools you prefer. You will work in our tools for work management and communication, such as Linear and Slack.
